The martins have pretty much finished up their activities at the colony this season. Today there were 2 circling around, but not landing on the housing. The adult male sang quite a bit - maybe he was saying thanks and so long until next season...
Today's nest check revealed 36 eggs across 7 gourds and *surprise* 4 eggs in Gourd G - we must have missed those eggs in the last check.
A: 3 eggs
B: 4 eggs
C: 6 eggs
D: nest
E: nest
F: 6 eggs
G: 4 young
H: -
I: 6 eggs
J: 1 eggs
K: 5 eggs
L: 5 eggs
10 out of 12 gourds have nesting material per our recent (3 Apr) nest check. Only Gourds H and L remain inactive. Of note, one of the gourds (
has wet sand/pond grass - a repeat unusual action from last year. Could be the same bird at work...
We've got the first camera (Colony-Cam) up and running now. A few wiring repairs are needed before we get the Gourd Cam running again. Hopefully the Site Cam is not too far behind either.
So far around 6 martins are hanging out here.
2 Purple Martins were hanging out on the gourd rack this morning. The "Dawn Song" was playing through outdoor speakers and may have attracted them - either way the season is truly underway now!
