English (US)   Winding down...  -  Categories: 2004 Martins  -  @ 01:44:00 pm

Today's nest check did not reveal any hoped for surprises (new nests in
gourds 2 or 9?) - but did reveal a dead bird in gourd 7. No obvious cause
of death - suspicions are choking/stung by food.
The last 3 fledglings remain in gourd #10 (GourdCAM).

English (US)   Hawk attack  -  Categories: 2004 Martins  -  @ 07:03:58 am

The fledglings that hang around the colony are initially very slow to take flight
when the other martins alert. Yesterday this cost one of them as a hawk
swept in and got him. The other martins continued to mob the hawk, but after
resting on the ground for a few seconds with his meal, he flew off across the
water. Hopefully the existing two decoys will act as recipients of a hawk
attack instead of the real thing.

English (US)   A few more late bloomers...  -  Categories: 2004 Martins  -  @ 05:24:05 pm

During yesterday's nest check, two more babies were surprisingly discovered in gourd 11. That gourd had had the same eggs in it for about 4 weeks - longer than normal hatching.
